RULES MATTER #28 - TIME OF STARTING

July 27, 2012

The new Rules of Golf for 2012 until 2015 have a number of amendments which I shall be update on Golferholics.Com progressively. Rule 6-3a. Time of Starting Rule 6-3a is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the starting time, is reduced from disqualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play. Previously this penalty reduction could be introduced as a condition of competition. This is a good amendment but the incentive is still there to leave home early – it’s heart breaking to see someone travel for Brisbane to the Gold Coast for an event only to be held up in traffic and being disqualified on arrival because they were over 5 minutes late. Advising the organisers you were stuck in traffic ...Read more...

RULES MATTER #27 - ADDRESSING THE BALL

April 20, 2012

The new Rules of Golf for 2012 until 2015 have a number of amendments which I shall update on Golferholics.Com progressively. Addressing the Ball The Definition is amended so that a player has addressed the ball simply by grounding their club immediately in front of or behind the ball, regardless of whether or not the player has taken their stance. Therefore, the Rules generally no longer provide for a player addressing the ball in a hazard. (See also related change to Rule 18-2b) As a consequence, a player will no longer be deemed to have addressed their ball in a bunker or a water hazard, as the Rules do not permit the grounding of a club in a hazard. Extracts form the Rules of Golf have been used in these articles to promote the game of golf. Knowledge of the ...Read more...

RULES MATTER #26 - SEEING BALL; SEARCHING FOR BALL

April 05, 2012

The new Rules of Golf for 2012 until 2015 have some amendments which I shall discuss over the next few weeks. A principle change that may catch players out – but in fairness the change is a valid one. Rule 12-1. Seeing Ball; Searching for Ball. Rule 12-1 is reformatted for clarity. In addition, it is amended to (i) permit a player to search for his ball anywhere on the course when it may be covered by sand and to clarify that there is no penalty if the ball is moved in these circumstances, and (ii) apply a penalty of one stroke under Rule 18-2a if a player moves his ball in a hazard when searching for it when it is believed to be covered by loose impediments. In these circumstances, and (ii) apply a penalty of one stroke under ...Read more...

RULES MATTER #25 - INDICATING LINE OF PLAY

February 13, 2012

Often during a game of golf we may find ourselves a little lost with respect to the position of the flag or even the green! What are we allowed to have assistance with? Other than on the putting green, a player may have the line of play indicated to him by anyone, but no one may be positioned by the player on or close to the line or an extension of the line beyond the hole while the stroke is being made. This means you can’t ask someone how far the putt may break or in which direction!Any mark placed by the player or with his knowledge to indicate the line must be removed before the stroke is made. Exception: Flagstick attended or held up - Before making a stroke from anywhere on the course, the player may have the ...Read more...

RULES MATTERS #24 - THROUGH THE GREEN: MOVING THE BALL WHILE SEARCHING

January 23, 2012

RULES OF GOLF 2012-2015 BRINGS CHANGES TO THE RULE FOR "THROUGH THE GREEN, MOVING THE BALL WHILE SEARCHING".  In the rough or through the green a fellow competitor, whilst searching for your ball accidently stands on it or kicks it moves it there is no penalty.  Should you, your partner or caddies (they are part of your team) stand on it or otherwise move it, you incur a two shot penalty. As mentioned in other articles the ball should also be replaced. There are many instances where caddies have been sacked on the spot for causing, or almost causing a Rules infringement which would then be passed on to caddy’s player. You would also notice that each player has his caddy attend the flag while he putts – this way there should not be an incident such as the flag not ...Read more...
