Trevor O’Hoy is a success story, a person who made it from virtually the cellar to the top shelf in the global liquor industry.
The Melbourne-based businessman started as a cadet executive at Carlton and United Beverages and ended up 28 years later as the president and CEO of CUB parent company the Foster’s Group.
He has emulated his business success in the higher echelons of sport, where he is on the boards of Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia, and the North Melbourne Football Club.
Trevor is also chair of the Ponting Foundation for Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting and wife Rianna.
His career in the liquor industry started in 1976 after he graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Economics degree and joined CUB.
His qualifications were supplemented later when he became a graduate of the Harvard University advanced management program for international managers.
His rise through the CUB ranks from a cadet executive starting point saw him undertake various accounting roles before being appointed general manager finance of the company's southern region in 1985.
Trevor’s advancement toward the top shelf saw him take senior global, treasury, finance and retail roles before, in 2002, he was appointed managing-director of CUB.
He was elevated to president and CEO of Foster’s two years later, roles he held until he resigned in 2008 after 32 years with the group.
The accolades he received while at Foster’s included being named BRW magazine’s most admired CEO of 2005.
Among Trevor’s charitable works is a place on the fundraising committee of the Song Room, which provides music and arts programs to disadvantaged children throughout Australia.
One of his directorships has a golf connection -- he sits on the board of the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria, which is one of the largest golf-course owners and managers in Australia.

How Did you start playing golf?
I started as a caddy at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in 1967.

What's your most "Infamous, Funniest or Best" moment in Golf?
My most memorable moment in golf happened recently while playing with the Australian cricket captain, Ricky Ponting, at NSW Golf Club.
After not troubling the scorers at all for the first 16 holes , being behind all day and being one down on the 16th, I hit my only good shot of the day .... a seven-iron to within three feet of the hole to enable Ricky and I to draw level at the 17th.
While hitting an iron that close is not normal for me, I always manage one good shot a round, which seems to be enough for me to forget all the bad shots and brings me back to try again.

What You Love about Golf:
What I enjoy most is the four hours of escape from the constant stream of emails and telephone calls.
This is especially so if the course has sensational views like NSW , Flinders , Cape Kidnappers and Pebble Beach
-
What You Hate about Golf:
What I hate most about golf is the constant unsuccessful pursuit of consistent play as well as rounds of golf that take more than four hours.
